In this article we go over the various applications you can make with the Shopify API.Whether your Front-End or Back-End or want to work for yourself or a company

Front-End vs Back-End

Front-End API

30 Free Best Shopify Themes For Your Online Store 2020 - Colorlib

There are two different kinds of applications you’ll make front-end (HTML, CSS, and Javascript) which has everything to do with the look and feel of the website. You’ll be able to take all of your knowledge from developing websites and apply it to making Shopify themes.

Themes – In a lot of ways we’re still in the infancy of Shopify with a large influx of business owners coming in. These business owners are going to buy a theme for their website vs hiring a developer to make it from scratch. This is going to be like people who got into WordPress theme development early in which some made millions. We’ve seen the payouts to developers and we’ve seen the Shopify stock price shoot up. I’m predicting that people who get into Shopify theme development. So for those who like the Front-End(HTML, CSS, and Javascript) and are skilled in Shopify. However, with this your just making static websites regardless of how beautiful they are they will need some dynamic data (products, inventory, etc). Here’s where Shopify has its own templating language called Liquid this will give you data from the various back-end Shopify APIs. This will allow customers to have the customizability and dynamic data they need to add/remove/edit products, blogs, and collections (a grouping of related products) to their page.

The Liquid API is based on Ruby. Which is probably one of the easier languages to learn if you don’t know it already. We have a great course on it here for $150, or you can get it included in a monthly membership for $20

Back-End APIs

Unlike the front-end, the back-end has multiple Shopify APIs you can use to either make applications built on the Shopify platform. These can be broken up into a couple of different categories

Shopify Admin API – This API is used to provide store owners with valuable information about their individual stores. This includes information products, inventory, shipping, sales, and more. So this opens the door to make data visualizations, alert texts, inventory integrations, and other kinds of apps to help business owners run their business. This API could be used with either REST or GraphQL

Shopify Storefront API – This API allows you to use the underlying Shopify technology with a non-Shopify storefront (front-end). Even opening the door to make mobile apps or even sell things in-game while using the Shopify platform for the backend. This API can only be accessed with GraphQL.

Shopify Embedded API – This allows you a lot of freedom with POS(Point of Sale) options for stores with brick and mortar stores that also have an online store via Shopify. Where you can see the Shopify UI or Admin section on your own infrastructure. Then make custom apps to help business owners.

Many More APIs on The Way

Shopify is constantly expanding the Shopify API. During Shopify Unite 2019 they announced over 10 APIs that will either be brand new or expand on a current API.

This is great because not only are more people using Shopify for their e-commerce needs, but Shopify is expanding what is possible for developers to do with their platform. If you want to read about all the new APIs being release you can read about it here
